  It's been a testing time for all of us but we have managed to keep our classes going online via Zoom, I know it's not the best solution for everyone but a huge 'WELL DONE' for those who have continued training. We have continued working on the basics and considering the kids program is made up of the basics, that's everything ;) I have seen some great improvements in all of you.

    They’ve found children’s fitness levels drop over the course of the summer holidays

  , so they often return to school in September overweight and with significantly lower cardiorespiratory fitness. This could have a severe long-term health impact for them, raising the risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease, a study by scientists at the UK Active health charity and the University of Essex has found.

    The study tracked the fitness and weight of more than 400 children

   aged nine and 10 in 13 primary schools across north-west England over a 13-month period. Researchers found fitness increased and body mass index (BMI) fell throughout the school year, from September of 2014 until July 2015. But those improvements were all but wiped out during the summer holidays. By the time they returned to school in the autumn of 2015, they were more likely to be unfit and overweight.

    Experts are worried that obesity is becoming normalised in Britain

   with 20% of children starting primary school at age four already overweight and 33% overweight by the time they start secondary school at age 11.

    What’s more, children in Britain are among the least active in the world

  . Government advice says children should do at least an hour of moderate intensity physical activity per day, but just 15% of girls and 22% of boys aged 11 to 15 in England manage this. Only one in three are doing any organised sport outside of school.

He said exercise has been shown to cut 3% of strokes, prevent 30% cases of dementia, 30 % of osteoporosis, radically reduce breast cancers and bowel cancers, prevent depression, reduce stress, and eliminate type 2 diabetes.

                    Ju Jitsu offers many benefits for kids, ranging from effective self-defence skills which on their own can help boost confidence significantly. There's also the health benefits - becoming fitter, stronger, more flexible, reducing stress and controlling weight.

  The Junior programs still incorporate safety awareness, personal values and fun fitness along with the Martial Arts skills.

  Learning Ju Jitsu is challenging which makes it very rewarding. The help on offer from Instructors and fellow students is very commendable, it makes for a very friendly, comfortable atmosphere which new students find very welcoming.

                    The perception of many parents is that martial arts for kids is simply teaching punching, kicking and learning how to fight.  However, this is such a limited way of thinking. Martial arts teaches many skills and offers many benefits that go far beyond most other activities available to children.

  Our Ju Jitsu program offers many additional benefits by combining safety awareness, personal values, fun fitness games and self defence skills.
  
                    &#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
  The personal values our own program covers are discipline, self-discipline, focus, respect, integrity, excellence and commitment. These are values most kids could benefit from.

  Parents contact us for several reasons, mainly because they want their children to learn discipline in a structured environment, to help them focus, to help increase confidence, to encourage their kids to be active, or to keep them fit and healthy but sometimes because their children have been bullied.

    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
  For me teaching martial arts for kids is very rewarding because we can help them in so many ways.

  We are teaching essential life skills children need know. learning skills to defend themselves if necessary or keep themselves safe, I think is equally important as say, learning to swim.

    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
  We are not always with our children and it's important they have these skills, not only for our peace of mind but for their own personal safety.

      The one arm shoulder throw

    is similar to the hip throw, it's simple and effective. Instead of wrapping one arm around the back it goes around the assailants arm.

    This type of throw can be performed from a static position but works best when the assailant is coming forward, giving you some momentum to take advantage of.

  Domestic Violence - Now is The Time to Speak

      Lets start with the Government definition of domestic violence -
    
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
    "Any incident of threatening behaviour, violence or abuse (psychological, physical, sexual, financial or emotional) between adults who are or have been intimate partners or family members, regardless of gender or sexuality."
  
                  &#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
      Whatever form Domestic Violence takes
    
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
    , it is rarely a one-off, it should be seen as a pattern of abusive and controlling behaviour through which the abuser seeks power over a victim. Typically abuse the behaviour tends to gwt worse over time. The abuse can begin any time, even after many years of life together. Domestic Abuse may start, continue, or escalate after a couple have separated and may take place not only in the home but also in public places.
  
                  &#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
      The Domestic Violence has a traumatic effect
    
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
    on those involved, including a partner's children who may see or hear incidents taking place.
  
                  &#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
      At Ju Jits Rugby
    
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
    , we can help arm people with skills to help in a situation but the victim must seek help from an organisation that deals specifically with Domestic Violence. A long term resolution is critical.
  
                  &#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
      Domestic Violence is a crime
    
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
    and needs to be reported to the Police.
  
                  &#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
      There are also several organisations you can contact
    
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
    or help but here's a good place to start.

      Every child is at risk of being bullied
    
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
    no matter what their personality is like. It is estimated that over 10% of children in school are at some time the target of a bully. Because bullying can be directed to anyone, you should not assume that your child will never be a target.
  
                  &#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
      Many times bullying issues will resolve themselves
    
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
    or grade or school changes will separate the children involved in bullying. Sometimes, however, bullying will remain constant and will cause serious damage, both emotionally and physically, to the victim. Because bullying is such a serious issue, knowing the risk factors for being bullied is important in determining if your child is at an increased risk for being targeted by a bully.
    
                    &#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
      Both boys and girls are most commonly bullied for being different
    
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
    , not fitting in, or lacking social skills. If your child has a handicap, has a hard time making friends, or fitting in with others, they have increased risk factors for being bullied. Children with differences such as small stature, physical defects, or cognitive difficulties are also at an increased risk factors for being bullied. Even if your child conforms to normal standards, they may have increased risk factors for being bullied if they are unpopular or are friends with other children who are bullied. Sometimes bullies even target children who are popular and confident because they are jealous so no child is safe from bullying.
    
                    &#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
      Another risk factor for being bullied is bullying others
    
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
    . Children who bully others often find themselves as a target of bullying after they have victimized others. If your child bullies others, they may become the target of retaliation and become the victims themselves even after they stop victimising others because the children they hurt want revenge. Warning signs of bullying behavior include general aggression, impulsiveness, the need to dominate, inability to cope with problems and the inability to empathize with others. If your child seems like the type that would bully others, they have increased risk factors for being bullied because victims often retaliate. Make sure your child understand that bullying is not acceptable and can have serious consequences for the rest of their lives.
    
                    &#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
      If your child has risk factors for being bullied
    
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
    , you should monitor their behavior and look for warning signs of bullying. These signs include withdraw from friends and activities, sudden fear of going to school, unexpected complaints of illness such as stomach pains and headaches, constantly coming home with damaged or missing belongings, and unexplained depression.
    
                    &#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
      Usually bullying can be stopped
    
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
    and long term damages avoided, but in severe cases, both parties can be affected for life. Be sure to teach your child what to do if they are faced with a bully and how to stop bullying behavior so that they will not suffer in the long term from bullying experiences. Don't assume that your child will never be bullied, sometimes bullying occurs with no warning signs or the victims refuse to talk about it.

      I'm sure you have some pre-conceived ideas

    but i'm sure it's not quite like you expect. The best thing you can do is go along to classes and give them a go for yourself. Some arts will be aimed at competition, some very traditional and others like our own Jiu Jitsu Classes are dedicated to effective Self Defence.
  
                  &#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
      You may think that training in a competitive Martial Arts
    
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
    will give you the necessary skills for you to defend yourself if you were attacked. To a degree you would be correct. However, there are also many differences which make it unsuitable in many situations.
  
                  &#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
      Yes, some of the strikes, throws and take-downs would be very similar
    
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
    but what happens when an attacker is twice your size, twice your weight and much stronger? What happens when that attacker grabs you, picks you up in the air, grabs your hair and throws you to the ground, or even starts to tear off your clothes as he has you pinned to the ground? There's no referee, there's nobody in your corner, there's no crowd to protect you, it's just you. What if the attacker has a knife at your throat? What happens after he's already broken your wrists or fingers, blood pouring from your broken nose? there's nobody to throw the towel in for you!
  
                  &#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
      You see, self defence training will help you
    
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
    to increase awareness and avoid situations. If you find yourself up against and aggressive person, you can learn to de escalate or diffuse the situation, there's no ego at stake, what's important is your personal safety and getting you home safely to your family. If you have to use your self defence skills, you have to learn to keep a clear head as much as possible and use skills which will end the situation very quickly. There are NO rules you have to abide by either. So you learn quick and dirty techniques to help end the attack in the 3 seconds or less. You see, the longer it drags on, the more the odds stack up against you.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;b&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
      The Skills you will learn in Jiu Jitsu Classes
    
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/b&gt;&#xD;
    
                    
     are designed for effective self defence and consist only of Gross Motor Skills. These are simple body movements virtually all people are capable of performing. They are not learned over months or years, these are movements you are already capable of performing, it's a really important part because if techniques consist of Fine Motor Skills, more complex or learned movements, these simply cannot be recalled by the majority of people in a high stress situation like that of an attack.
